Screening blood samples for cancerous cells is an essential part of oncology. Currently such screening tools are bulky and expensive apparatus, that require a highly-trained operator. This work aims to increase the practicality of these systems through the combination of technologies that miniaturisation can provide. Utilising the unique optical sensing properties of single-photon-avalanche diodes (SPADS) integrated in a standard CMOS process, a monolithic cell screening device has been demonstrated.
