The research goal is design and characterise custom integrated circuits for integration with sensors to improve their performance by enabling the electronics to be located much closer to the oxygen sensors to help optimise their sensitivity on monitoring the response of chronic hypoxic cells to low dose-rate irradiation. Such studies are very important and offer new possibilities for therapy.

In addition the platform electronics will be designed to make it possible to monitor multiple sensors without the requirement for each sensor having to be connected with its own set of wires. The initial goal of the University of Edinburgh's studies is to integrate analogue front-end circuits with the oxygen sensors fabricated in IMTEK, University of Freiberg.
